unit efficiency for defense

It's obvious from just looking at them, but if you do the math, Phalanx remain the best units for defense even compared to higher-end units and including upgrades. Because I don't want to bury the call to arms below I'll put the calculations in a comment.

Phalanx (disregarding innate resistance bonus):
(24+40)/24 = 2.66
((24+6+6)+(40+10+10))/24 = 4
((24+6+6+6)+(40+10+10+10))/24 = 4.6

Phalanx (including innate resistance bonus (defense x 1.3)):
(24+52)/24 = 3.16
((24+6+6)+(78))/24 = 4.75
((24+6+6+6)+(91))/24 = 5.54

Archer:
(40+40)/32 = 2.5
((40+10+10)+(40+10+10))/32 = 3.75
((40+10+10+10)+(40+10+10+10))/32 = 4.375

Gunsman:
(80+64)/58 = 2.48
((80+18+18)+(64+14+14)/58 = 3.58
((80+18+18+18)+(64+14+14+14)/58 = 4.14

So, if you value units of sword and shield power equally and disregard purchase prices, Phalanx remain the most cost effective units for defense even into the higher-end game with upgrades. I suspect that this will remain the case until you get to steam giants.

Also, it looks like archers are slightly more efficient than gunsmen, even for offense, especially considering exterior costs, stamina, etc.
